Photo Confessions: Why I Prefer the Lifestyle Approach

When it comes to photography, there are different ways a photographer approaches who, what and where they photograph. As for me, I prefer to capture people how they naturally are. I don’t want to stage or pose them to the extent that I tell my story about them. Instead, I want to create a space where they can naturally unfold with a bit of artistic direction. Because of this, I fit in the lifestyle category.

What is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is a style that aims to capture real moments and authentic expressions. The attention to detail, composition and lighting are the artistic elements that take candid reactions beyond an ordinary snapshot. In my opinion, it tells us more about the subject than any other style. Here are a few reasons lifestyle works for me:

It’s About Flexibility…

Lifestyle session can be taken anywhere. I don’t have to worry where a shoot will take place because options are endless. Photographing a couple at their home will produce beautiful and meaningful shots as great as another couple I photograph in the fields. Environments and locations compliment the individuals rather than limiting my subjects to something that does not fit their mold.

It’s About How It Makes You Feel…

Typically, lifestyle sessions will take place where my subjects feel most comfortable. This makes them relax and warm up a lot quicker when I begin snapping away. When I switched from a fashion photographer to people photographer, I noticed that the majority of the people I photograph do not like being in front of the camera. Having a lifestyle approach helps me create a positive atmosphere for my subjects to enjoy the photography experience.

It’s About The Story It Tells…

When I capture true emotions and candids in a lifestyle session, I end up telling a very unique story that can never be replicated. The experience with each subject makes for memories that are different and one of a kind. And I love that! I love that when I capture people, they can look back at the fun, intimate, adventurous times they had as well as think of how each moment came to be and that I was there to document it. It’s quite perfectly beautiful how imperfectly unpredictable life can be and that’s what I want people to take away with my sessions. The way they love and live is worth remembering, and I take so much from each person that stands in front of my lens. I get to help make memories and that is my greatest reward.

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”
